Frequently Asked Questions
How can I join?
All UCSD undergraduate students are welcome to join, regardless of prior experience. The pathway into Triton TV is the intern program. We have new interns every quarter that we personally teach, shepherd, and induct into the world of filmmaking and Triton TV. For more information about the intern program click here.
I have never touched a camera before. Can I still apply for the Intern Program?
Absolutely. The program is designed to accommodate students of all experience levels. You will learn the tricks of the trade from the bottom up. While there are no requirements as far as filmmaking experience is concerned, all prospective interns must be eager to learn, and enthusiastic to work with others.
I already have extensive camera experience. Do I still have to go through the intern program?
Yes. The intern program isn't just a place to learn basic filmmaking techniques. Instead, it can be a place to hone advanced techniques, and get acquainted with the workflow of the studio and other Triton TV members. In fact, the intern program is at its best when there is a variety of experience levels. Filmmakers are always learning!
Where can I view Triton TV's work?
Many of our videos can be seen on this website. In addition, we encourage you to take a look at our Vimeo and YouTube channels. Like our Facebook page to make sure you always catch our most recent videos!
I need a video made. What do I do?
Please send us an email describing the project with as much detail as possible. We will pitch the project at our next General Body Meeting. Depending on the interest of our members, we will assign your project to one or our producers and then begin to determine production details from there.
Can I attend a meeting to pitch a video project?
Absolutely. We have General Body Meetings every even week (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) on Wednesdays at 8pm in the Triton TV Studio. These meetings are open to the public to pitch videos or to check out the organization. If you plan on pitching a project, we ask that you let us know ahead of time so we can put you on the agenda. Our members are always more excited to work with clients who come pitch their projects in person!
Where is the studio located?
The Studio is on the 2nd floor of the Original Student Center right around the corner from the Treehouse computer lounge. Take the elevator next to the General Store up to the second level and turn to your left. The Original Student Center is located between Muir and Revelle colleges on the UC San Diego campus.
Does Triton TV charge for their services? How much?
Yes and no. Generally speaking, we charge $50/hr of shooting plus $100/minute of edited footage. However, these rates are subject to change based on the nature of each individual project. As a student service, we offer a $500 credit per academic year for any student organization. We do not charge other branches of Associated Students. For specific quotes, shoot us an email.
Where does the money earned from paid projects go?
All of the money goes back into a savings account to ensure that we have the funds to cover costs of equipment and maintenance as they arise. All of this is to ensure that Triton TV remains a strong resource for future generations of student filmmakers. None of the proceeds go directly to the students working on the projects.
Where does Triton TV get its funding from?
In addition to paid projects, Triton TV is an AS Service that receives an annual allocation from Associated Students.
What exactly is an AS Service?
"AS Services" is a branch of Associated Students. Each service strives to help the community of tritons at UCSD. Other AS Services include KSDT, A.S. Graphics Studio, A.S. Safe Rides, and many more.
